Native American Heritage Month 2023

Posted On: October 31, 2023

November is National Native American Heritage Month.  The U.S. Department of Labor celebrates the diverse culture and heritage of Tribal Nations and Indian people who deeply enrich the quality and character of our country. We also hope to use this month to highlight information that can lead to greater understanding and promote respect and equity.

Throughout this country’s history, Tribal Nations and Indian people have experienced discrimination, inequity, cruelty, and violence. Even with such adversity, Native Americans continued to protect their tradition and culture, support their community, and build for the future.  Tribal Nations have exemplified courage and resilience.

Today, there are over 500 Tribal Nations that make up the tapestry of governments across the country. Tribes exercise their sovereignty to deliver services and provide infrastructure to their citizens and adjacent communities. Tribal communities also serve as important economic and cultural hubs in the United States.
